How Publications are Optimized for SEO
- When a publication is created, the Publicator system automatically sends text phrases together with the URL to Google through a service called Sitemaps.
- When a catalog is indexed by Google, Publicator makes the text within the publication available to the indexing spider.
- We cannot precisely say when Google will index the catalog, but to speed up the process:
- Links through yours and other websites will help the ranking
- Make sure the page text is relevant to your publication content
- Emails/Outlook unfortunately do not help, as search engines only see referrers and links via URLs
Optimizing Publications for Search Depends on Configuration
NOTE: For full control over SEO and to leverage any existing site SEO, Zmags recommends that a Publication be embedded into a website using our embed code. In doing so, full control of searchable keywords and metatags is done in the HTML page the Publication has been embedded and NOT by Publicator.
For Publications with an embedded viewer or IFRAME (embedded on a specific page within a website):
- Concentrate SEO efforts for the html page the publication is embedded within. This will then not detract from other content pages on your website and ensures focus on inspirational keywords and tags that will drive traffic to the page the Publication is embedded.
- Pros: Easy to do, and search engine traffic is pointed to your webpage, benefiting from SEO of your existing site structure, can add value to SEO on website, and the Zmags URL can remain a constant even when updating/delivering new content.
SEO for Publications being distributed using the Viewer.zmags.com URL
- Optimize actual publication content
- Switch on search engine indexing within the Viewer configuration
- Submit your publication URL to major search engines to make it searchable (http://www.google.co.uk/submit_content.html)
- Browser Title / Title Tag (not relevant when embedding Publication on a website):
- The title of the publication is the title tag. This is one of the most important factors in SEO, as the title tag is what appears in the search engine results page (SERP) when your publication is found.
- Publication Page Text (not relevant when embedding Publication on a website):
- When PDFs are uploaded to our system we attempt to extract the text from the PDF pages.
- Found in the ‘Pages’ tab within the Edit Publication area, this serves as:
- the text description that is picked up in Google / other search engines
- the text that is picked up when sharing the publication in Facebook
- a general guideline, place a description of the page (i.e., the article heading and summary) or some sentences of what content is displayed in the page, as Google prefers this to just Keyword content.

How to Optimize an embedded publication for SEO
Note: This tutorial assumes that you are familiar with the basics of embedding the Viewer in your HTML pages.
One of the key components of hosting a publication on your site is to make sure that your publication page is optimised for search engines. By placing an embedded viewer on your existing website you automatically benefit from having all of the hard work you have already done in search engine optimisation as the publication will form part of your existing site structure.
Here is a simple example of how to optimize your publication more effectively with some tricks that we use internally.
1) First we need to setup our our basic viewer script on our html page with some basic DOCTYPE and META tags configured:

2) Next we need to configure the TITLE and the META tags within the HEAD area of our page.
The TITLE tag configures the Title of our page which is displayed on the browser window chrome and also in the heading of the search engine result. The META tags tell the search engine spiders about the content that is displayed on the page, some popular example tags to demonstrate this are:

3) Next we need to use some of the optimisation code that we use in our standard viewer.zmags.com page on this page.
To do this you need to open up your publication on the viewer.zmags.com URL using the Standard URL which you can find in the publish section of your My Publications area:

Typically, you can open the source code of a page by pressing CTRL + U while viewing that page in your browser. Alternatively, you should see options to do this when right clicking anywhere on a page.
4) Next we need to grab the source code within the NOFRAMES tag at the bottom of the HTML page which contains some of the text of pages of the publication and also links to the internal pages of the publication. The code looks something like the following:
